The memo and, perhaps, the installation of fire extinguishers in the common areas is, unfortunately, ill considered and poorly addressed. As a former risk manager at a multi-national corporation, I can affirm that we took fire extinguishers very seriously. We provided training in their use to selected employees (using them correctly is not easy or intuitive). In addition, we regularly reminded employees of proper procedures in the event of a fire. The memo sent by Barhite & Holtzinger reminded folks to call 911 as an after thought. All in all I think the memo sets the Board and Barhite up for a law suite in the event of a fire that goes bad.
Following are some fire safety and fire extinguisher tips. I continue to emphasize that training (apparently nor being provided) is required. The hoses should not, under any circumstances, be used.
Calling 911 is not an after thought --- it is the first think one considers or does.
PROCEDURES IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE
Call the fire department (911) or have someone do it for you
Assist those who are in danger or unable to leave the building on their own to leave the building --- without risk to yourself
If it is safe and reasonable, attempt to extinguish the fire
ONLY FIGHT A FIRE
If the fire is small and contained
If you are safe from toxic smoke
If you have a means of escape
If your instincts tell you its OK
I strongly suggest that Barhite involve the Fire Marshal in providing instructions to residents. If that is insufficient, they should hire a professional safety engineer to provide assistance.
If there are any questions. People on the Board know who I am.
